Tell us a bit about yourself (how long you’ve worked for ESTC, what is your role, what club do you support).
This is my tenth year with The FA, which is slightly terrifying when I say it out loud. I’m currently the Senior Membership and Operations Manager for ESTC. As for club football, I’m a Chelsea supporter. I inherited that from my old man.
How excited are you for the World Cup?
From a supporter perspective, hugely excited. When I was a kid, my tournament excitement was built on blind faith and the belief that we were the best. Now, it feels like I am excited about the fact that we genuinely have the technical ability to do it, both on the pitch and behind the scenes. It feels like a huge summer could be upon us… but then I start thinking about all the heartbreak over the years and it brings me back down to earth a little! Short answer: I’m always excited. The World Cup is the best thing in football. Country over club for me, always.
How busy have you been preparing for it?
Don’t ask.
What is your message to ESTC members travelling?
Honestly, if anyone bothers to read my bit, it’s simply that I’m always in awe of the numbers that travel with England. I spend half the game just watching the away end sing (or looking for Tango with his top off). There is genuinely no better travelling support in the world in my opinion. So, the only thing I’d say is, if you’ve managed to get out here, have a great trip and GSTK (and Chelsea).
What city are you most looking forward to visiting?
I think Mexico City if England end up going that way, but I’d also love to find a moment to get to the Cheers Bar in Boston if I can. The reality is we don’t get much free time at all. It’s mostly hotels, stadiums and whatever happens to be near the hotel, although I know a lot of supporters won’t believe that!
Will we see you and your team out there?
Absolutely. We’ll be present throughout the tournament and available at all stadium ticketing venues. We’ll also have published opening hours at the FSA Fans’ Embassy and will be looking to organise various trips, experiences and supporter events where possible. We’re hoping to spend time with supporter groups while we’re out there too. On matchdays, once kick-off arrives, we’ll be acting as FIFA’s official Fan Liaison Officers in the England end, working as the link between supporters, FIFA and the stadium. So, if you see us around, do come and say hello (even if it is a complaint!).
